OTHELLO — A new wildfire grew explosively on Saturday, burning an estimated 8,000 acres in less than 12 hours. The Cowlash fire ignited around 7:40 on Saturday morning near Mabton in Yakima County. It is burning in sage, heavy brush, and grass. Level 2 and 3 evacuation orders have been issued. The fire line is moving toward Benton County.

The State Emergency Operations Center is providing support to fight the fire. Current containment is zero percent. The cause is under investigation.
