OTHELLO – The Othello City Council voted to enter into a contract with NAC Architecture for a feasibility study and design services for the reconstruction of the Othello Community Pool. The pool, which was closed in the Spring of 2024, was deemed to be unsafe due to issues arising from improper installation of piping during its original construction. The value of the contract is $115,560.
According to an exhibit attached to the board agenda, the scope of NAC’s work will include a visioning workshop “to determine potential directions for architectural theme development and aquatic amenities.” They will also study the feasibility of repairing the existing pool so it can be reopened or whether a new facility should be constructed. In the end, proposals will be developed, including conceptual plans and drawings. The timeline for NAC’s work includes presentations to the public and city council.
The closure of the popular community pool has been a loss for water-loving Othello residents. Mayor Logan noted during the meeting that on very hot days, the facility is so packed that it’s good for cooling off, but not for actual swimming. To offer a new, if not less immersive, way to beat the summer heat, the city is planning to install a splash pad in Kiwanis Park.
