OTHELLO — Huskie varsity football racked up another decisive win in their first home game against CWAC opponent Selah on Friday night. The Huskies posted a 46-13 win in a game that was packed with penalties on both sides – some earned, others not so much.
Othello dominated the ground game, with 300 rushing yards, including five touchdowns, to Selah’s 77 yards and one rushing touchdown.
The passing game was less lopsided, but Othello still came out on top with 85 aerial yards and one touchdown to Selah’s 51.
Both teams capitalized on Turnovers. Early in the game, Selah’s Calen Wuitschick ( junior RB) turned an endzone interception into a 103-yard pick six. Wuitschick scored both of Selah’s touchdowns for the night.
Gavin Carl (senior LB/RB), Alex Garza (senior DL/OL), RJay Garza (senior WR/DB), Quade Gonzalez (senior QB) all found their way to the endzone for the Huskies. Carlos Castillo (senior OL/DL) recovered a fumble for a touchdown as well.
Penalties were an issue for both teams, something the Huskies pledge to work on. Othello Assistant Coach Kevin Hale said, “It’s simple, really. You play like you practice. Focus during practice has to improve. That means focus on every rep during every drill. We are constantly reminding our kids about that during practice. At some point, the players have to take it upon themselves to change and have better focus during practice. No amount of conditioning or whatever other tool we can use as coaches will be effective until the players allow themselves to change.
