Graffiti report leads to felon’s arrest in Othello

OTHELLO — An alert citizen’s report of graffiti led to the arrest of a convicted felon who was allegedly carrying a firearm Wednesday night.

Adams County Sheriff’s Office received a report of vandalism on Oct. 1 near W. June Street and S. Andes Road. The reporting party photographed the vehicle believed to be involved and gave deputies a description of the suspect. The person fled before law enforcement arrived.

The case took a turn later that evening when Othello Police Department officers were dispatched to a report of graffiti in progress at Taggares Park. Sheriff’s deputies responded to assist, and an Othello officer arrested a juvenile.

During that response, authorities learned the same vehicle reported earlier had also been at the park. It had already left, so deputies passed along its description and asked Othello officers to watch for it.

Deputies located the suspect vehicle within Othello city limits later that night. Police contacted 26-year-old Dario Ochoa Jr. of Othello. Authorities said Ochoa matched the witness’s description.

Deputies detained Ochoa and found a firearm in his possession, according to the sheriff’s office. Because Ochoa is a convicted felon, he is prohibited from possessing firearms.

Ochoa was booked into jail on suspicion of unlawful possession of a firearm and third-degree malicious mischief.

The sheriff’s office said the case remains under investigation and additional follow-up is possible.

Sheriff’s officials credited the witness for reporting the vandalism and documenting the vehicle, saying the information helped investigators identify Ochoa. The office also thanked Othello police for assisting with the case.
