OTHELLO — High temperatures and poor air quality is driving local school districts to make changes to athletics practices and events this week.

In a social media post, Othello School District Athletic Director Carlos González sent messaging to middle and high school families today. He said “To ensure the health and safety of all students, all outdoor practices and extracurricular activities will be moved indoors today and tomorrow. We will continue to monitor conditions closely and provide updates if further adjustments are needed.” The message indicated that the changes would be in effect through at least through Wednesday.

In Moses Lake, air quality is a safety concern. “As a result of the outside air quality index, outside athletics and activities will be cancelled, or moved indoors, on Tuesday, Sept. 2,” their messaging said. The district cited unhealth air quality index numbers in their decision making.

High temperatures in the region are expected to exceed 100 degrees on Wednesday, far above Othello’s average high temperature of 84 for Sept. 3.
